Quarter-final, part two. Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City will go head to head in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final return leg on Wednesday evening (21:00 CET). The English outfit have only previously reached the last four once (in 2016), while Borussia reached the semi-finals in 1997, 1998 and 2013.

The scenario

  • Having lost the first leg 2-1, BVB need a victory to progress to the semi-finals. They will go through either with a 1-0 win or a victory by two clear goals (3-1, 4-2, etc.).
  • Should Borussia Dortmund be winning 2-1 after 90 minutes, the game will go to extra-time. If there are no further goals, there will be a penalty shootout.
  • Borussia Dortmund's record in UEFA penalty shootouts: two wins (6-5 vs. AJ Auxerre in the 1992/93 UEFA Cup semi-finals and 3-1 vs. Rangers in the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup third round) and two defeats (4-2 vs. Club Brugge in the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League qualifiers and 4-3 vs. Udinese in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup first round).
  • Manchester City have won their only two previous penalty shootouts, both in the 2008/09 season (against Midtjylland and Aalborg).

Manchester City facts

  • Coach Pep Guardiola's team have reached the quarter-finals for the fourth season in succession, but have lost at this stage in the past three seasons to Lyon, Tottenham and Liverpool respectively. Only in 2015/16 did the English club reach the last four.
  • City had gone 789 minutes without conceding a goal in the UEFA Champions League – until Marco Reus levelled the score at 1-1 in the first leg. The competition record, which was set by Arsenal in 2005/06, stands at 995 minutes.
  • The Brits reached the quarter-finals courtesy of seven wins and a 17-1 goal difference.
  • In their last 22 matches in the UCL, Manchester City have found the net 54 times. Over the past three seasons, there have been 21 victories, four draws and three defeats (combined goal difference of 70-23).
