With an eye on the future, Borussia Dortmund signed young right-back Mateu Morey ahead of the 2019/20 season. The 19-year-old Spain youth international, who most recently played for FC Barcelona, signed a long-term contract until 30 June 2024.
It was clear from the remarks made by Michael Zorc when Morey joined ("Mateu is a top defensive talent from the FC Barcelona academy who possesses exceptional technical quality. We see this transfer as being one for the future and are looking forward to developing Mateu within our first-team squad") what the plan would be: the Spain youth international, who was born in 2000, is to be gradually eased into the Bundesliga and has been earmarked as the long-term replacement for Lukasz Piszczek. He is seen as one of the most talented young right-backs in Europe, but suffered two severe knee injuries last year which meant he didn't make an appearance all season.
"Borussia Dortmund are a fantastic club and they place a lot of emphasis on youth. I'm confident, with my qualities, that I'll have a lot to offer the team in the years to come," said the youngster, adding: "I want to integrate quickly, support the team and, above all, learn the language. Doing the latter will make everything easier." Morey helped FC Barcelona beat Chelsea to lift the UEFA Youth League in 2017/18 and also won the U17 European Championship with Spain in the summer of 2017. The Mallorca native, who was born on 2 March 2000, levelled the score at 1-1 in the final against Jadon Sancho's England, before slotting home a penalty to put his side 4-1 up in the shootout.
