The 19-year-old midfielder has been under contract with Borussia Dortmund since July 2016. As of June 2022 (reference date for all stats), the German U19 international has not yet played a competitive game with the first team, but has played in friendlies.
Göktan Gürpüz was born in Duisburg on 22 January 2003, initially played for Hamborn 05, moved to the FC Schalke 04 youth team in 2011 as an eight-year-old, and joined Borussia Dortmund for the 2016/17 season, where he has played for all the youth teams since the U15s – and made his mark as an intelligent midfielder who reads the game well and feels most comfortable in the middle or on the inside-left. He is strong in the tackle and plays with great dynamism. Under the guidance of U19s coach Mike Tullberg, he took a big step forward last season, putting his great understanding of the game on show. Gürpüz played particularly well in the UEFA Youth League, where he scored four goals in eight games. He contributed a further two goals and nine assists as he helped his side win the German U19 Championship. In December 2021, he was awarded a professional contract for the 2022/23 season.
"I'm happy for Göktan just because he's an extremely nice, hard-working guy. But he has not only come on greatly as a man," Lars Ricken, director of the youth performance centre, told the Ruhr Nachrichten newspaper, adding: "I still remember that as an U17 player, he played in the U19s Youth League against Barcelona and was the best player on the pitch. That was the moment when everyone finally saw that he is a really good footballer. It has a great deal of game intelligence, is quick to act and recognises the spaces he has to operate in. The more he can play with good footballers, the more he will be able to use his strengths. Because he can also put his team members in great positions." Already in the pre-season ahead of the 2021/22 season, he was given the opportunity to show his skills with the first team and was in the Bundesliga squad three times during the first four games, but has not yet made it on to the pitch.
Gürpüz has dual German and Turkish nationality and initially played youth international games for his parents' country, before he decided to switch allegiances to Germany from the U19s (eight appearances, one goal as of June 2022).
