Despite their opening-day defeat in Rome, Borussia Dortmund sit atop Group F halfway through the group stages and will play host to FC Brugge on Matchday 4. Here are the facts ahead of Tuesday evening's match, which kicks off at 21:00 CET.

The scenario

Borussia Dortmund go into Matchday 4 in top spot with six points, one ahead of Lazio (five). Brugge (four) are two points behind in third place.

History

  • Borussia Dortmund and FC Brugge previously met in the 2018/19 Champions League group stages. Christian Pulisic scored the winner in Belgium as BVB claimed a 1-0 victory, while the return fixture at the Strobelallee ended 0-0.
  • Before that, there had been four meetings between the two clubs – with the home team always emerging victorious. But it was the Belgians who had the last laugh, progressing to the next round in both 2003/04 (UEFA Champions League qualifiers) and 1986/87 (UEFA Cup third round).

BVB facts

  • Borussia succumbed to a 3-1 defeat to Lazio in Rome on the opening day of the group stages. But they have bounced back with two wins – 2-0 at home against Zenit and 3-0 in Bruges.
  • BVB have won six of their last 10 games in European competition. All four defeats came away from home.
  • The Black & Yellows have won each of their last four home games.
  • Erling Haaland, who has scored in all three of the group games, has scored 14 goals in 11 Champions League appearances for Borussia Dortmund and FC Salzburg.

FC Brugge facts

  • The Belgians kicked off their Group F campaign with a 2-1 victory in St. Petersburg and then picked up a point at home to Lazio (1-1). They subsequently lost their second home game 3-0 to BVB.
  • Brugge are in the group stages for the third year in a row – an unprecedented run in the club's history. In total, it is their eighth participation in Europe's elite club competition. Belgium's reigning champions have never previously reached the knockout stages.
  • FC Brugge finished third in their group behind Paris St. Germain and Real Madrid in the 2019/20 campaign (three draws, three defeats). They also finished third in their group in the previous season.
  • The win away to Zenit on Matchday 1 was only Brugge's second victory in their past 21 UEFA Champions League matches. Both victories have been on the road.
  • Brugge have won only one of their past 12 matches against German teams (D3 L8).
  • The Jupiler League leaders have won eight of their 13 league games this term. They most recently beat Kortrijk 1-0 at home on Saturday.
