It was a night to remember for Marcel Schmelzer. The 6-1 win away to SC Paderborn saw the 32-year-old defender notch up both a goal and an assist in a single game for the first time in his playing career.

In the 85th minute, the former club captain provided the assist for Achraf Hakimi to make it 4-1. Four minutes later, he was on hand to convert Axel Witsel's cross to bring the score to 5-1. It was Schmelzer's first goal in the Bundesliga in 2,079 days, almost seven years. The last time he got on the scoresheet was on 21 September 2013, when he scored from a free-kick in a 1-1 draw away to 1. FC Nuremberg.

The defensive stalwart had never previously found the back of the net and provided an assist in the same game across his 364 first-team appearances for the Black & Yellows. What makes it all the more remarkable is the fact that Schmelzer didn't come on until the 80th minute in Paderborn. (br)
