André Schürrle was among those frustrated with the chances spurned in the 1-1 draw in Bremen – especially his own, of course. "For the one where I was through on goal, I just had to get a bit of height on it and it would've been in," he said to BVBtotal!. "Against Mainz we'll have to put in a good performance in our own stadium, win and wrap it up once and for all," said Schürrle in reference to the upcoming match.

Almost all of you were still looking slightly incredulously at the screens down here in the catacombs just now…
"Yes, it's unbelievable. I can only speak about myself. For the one where I was through on goal, I just needed to get a bit of height on it and it would've been in. A goalkeeper can almost always stick out a low foot so you need to hit those shots a bit higher. That's frustrating. We would've deserved the victory. Especially for the second half, where we really found our way back into the game and had very good chances. Marco hit the post, Jadon had a header and I had a header too. That said, Bremen did have one or two chances themselves and countered well. That's why we couldn't throw everything forward into attack. Either way, it's a tough one, based on the chances we had we should've won the match."

The missed chances aside, what conclusions can you draw on your performance in Bremen?
"We didn't get into the game so well, Bremen did that well. We seemed a bit sleepy, we were looking for the spaces where we could break through. And then we took the lead but it didn't do us as much good as we needed it to. So you could say that Bremen's equaliser was not undeserved. In the second half it swung back and forth, based on the chances we could've won it. Nonetheless, it was progress, because we were present, went into the tackles and created goalscoring chances. That hasn't always been the case in recent away games."

"Can't allow ourselves to let it slip

Next week against Mainz you have the chance to finally wrap up qualification for the UEFA Champions League…
"It's looking good, because we have a small four-point lead over Leverkusen. We can't allow ourselves to let that slip. Against Mainz we'll need to put in a good performance in our own stadium, win and wrap it up once and for all." (djg)
